Mexico allocates 70 billion pesos to road upgrades in 2026

The Mexican government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), announced a 70 billion‑peso (about $3.6 billion) investment for the 2026 fiscal year to improve the nation’s road network. The plan includes the construction of 388 artisanal roads covering 888 km in 18 states, the repair of 37,295 potholes, repaving of 1,392 km of highways, and the refurbishment of 4,037 km of free‑toll federal roads, bridges and toll plazas.

The programme is expected to generate roughly 78,000 direct and indirect jobs and involves more than 3,000 road‑work contracts. SICT will acquire 62 new pothole‑repair machines, add 11 of the 20 repaving trains slated for deployment, and use AI‑enabled cameras for real‑time monitoring. From 2027 to 2030, an additional 6 billion pesos per year will be earmarked for artisanal roads, benefiting around 327,000 residents.
