Mexico and Argentina Alert on Youth Brain Risks from Excessive Screen Time

Neurodevelopment specialists warned that heavy use of social media, video games and other digital platforms can alter brain function in children and adolescents. They said constant reward‑system overstimulation raises dopamine levels beyond those from ordinary activities, potentially damaging the prefrontal cortex that controls attention, impulse control, emotions and decision‑making. Reported effects include anxiety, irritability, sleep disruption, reduced concentration and increased sedentary behavior.

In Mexico, addiction‑prevention expert Tania Jiménez García told a federal government conference that current digital habits could keep young people in front of screens for up to 20 years of their lives. Education secretary Mario Delgado noted that algorithms now shape user behavior, and President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to gather specialist input to develop protective measures for minors.

In San Juan, Argentina, Daniela Merlo, director of Prevention and Assistance for Problematic Consumption, emphasized the rising involvement of children and adolescents in online gambling and excessive screen use. She urged families to supervise device time and content, and to engage in early dialogue to detect risky behaviours before they lead to larger problems.
