Mexico and Belgium deepen strategic cooperation during Brussels talks
Mexico’s Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador María Teresa Mercado Pérez, together with Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, visited Brussels to co‑preside the XI Mechanism of Political Consultations Mexico‑Belgium. The meeting reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations and pledged deeper cooperation in strategic sectors where Belgium is a global reference, including health and biopharma, semiconductors, scientific and technological innovation, port logistics and clean energy.
Both delegations also discussed expanding academic and security collaboration, reviewing commercial and investment flows, and advancing the Modernised Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union. Mexico sought Belgian support for the rapid ratification of the agreement and highlighted the European Commission’s pledge to mobilise €5 billion for Mexico under the Global Gateway initiative. In particular, cooperation between the ports of Antwerp and Guaymas was cited as a model for port‑decarbonisation, sustainable logistics and infrastructure modernisation.
