Ferromex spill prompts remediation and new fishing bans in Mexico
A Ferromex freight train in Sonora spilled roughly 70,300 L of sodium hydroxide and 240 t of copper concentrate, contaminating about 1.7 km² of stream area. The Federal Environmental Protection Prosecutor's Office (Profepa) ordered immediate containment, removal of the copper load, and a remediation plan covering at least three kilometres of the waterway.
The Mexican fisheries authority, Conapesca, announced a series of seasonal bans effective 1 August 2026, prohibiting the capture of abalone, shrimp, octopus and sharks in designated zones, while opening periods for species such as callo de hacha, octopus and rays begin the same day. It also set two temporary tuna bans in Pacific waters: 6 Aug–8 Oct 2026 and 9 Nov 2026–11 Jan 2027.
In a separate development, the Veracruz cooperative Bioproductores del Llano Alto exported 40.4 t of Persian lime to the United States (19 t) and Russia (21.4 t), marking the first direct shipments under the Sembrando Vida program’s market‑access strategy.
