Mexico and Central America launch regional strategy against cattle screw worm

Mexico and several Central American nations have launched a coordinated regional strategy to eradicate the cattle screw worm (GBG). In collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), representatives from the ministries of agriculture in Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama have established the Regional Technical Group of the Sanitary Intelligence Center for this pest (CRIS-GBG).

The initiative aims to strengthen surveillance, control, training, and knowledge transfer to protect the continent’s livestock heritage. By moving beyond individual national approaches, the group intends to optimize information analysis and decision-making through a shared sanitary intelligence framework. This collaborative effort seeks to leverage two years of accumulated experience to establish a common agenda for the rapid eradication of the transboundary threat while respecting the sovereignty of each participating nation.
