Mexico and Chile push corporate redesign and composting to curb plastic waste
Mexico generates about 5.7 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with up to 58 % poorly managed, prompting companies to adopt circular design principles. Businesses such as Sistema B México, hotel chain BF and personal‑care brand Rayito de Luna are eliminating single‑use plastics, using reusable packaging and tracking material flows to meet new B‑Lab certification standards.
In Chile, mixing plastic bags with organic waste undermines composting efforts, as even small plastic contaminants can render entire batches unsuitable for compost. Local Compost highlights that only about 1 % of Chile’s organic waste is valorised, while the majority ends in landfills producing methane. The company promotes segregated collection and forced‑air composting to preserve the value of organic material, stressing the need for households to keep plastics out of organic bins.
