In Sonora, Mexico, the proportion of non‑emergency 911 calls fell from roughly 75‑80 % to 50 % during the current administration. State‑wide coordinator Benjamin González Caballero of the C5i command reported a steady month‑by‑month decline, attributing the improvement to citizen‑awareness efforts and better use of the emergency line.
In Bogotá, Colombia, more than 3.2 million calls reached the 123 emergency helpline in the first half of the year, but only about 1.1 million were genuine emergencies, meaning over 65 % were improper calls such as jokes, harassment or information requests. Security Secretary César Restrepo urged the public to treat the service responsibly, emphasizing that each legitimate call can be the difference between life and death.
Both authorities highlighted the strain that false calls place on police, medical and rescue resources and stressed ongoing campaigns to educate the public on proper use of emergency numbers.
