Mexico and Cuba honor bolero as shared cultural heritage

Mexico and Cuba have held a ceremony to honor the bolero, a musical genre that serves as a vital component of the cultural memory and identity of both nations. The event highlighted the genre's origins in Cuba during the second half of the 19th century and its subsequent internationalization through Mexico, driven by the development of radio, the phonographic industry, and the Golden Age of Mexican cinema between the 1930s and 1950s.

Ambassador Luz Elena Baños noted that the bolero was officially recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on September 5, 2023, following a joint binational application by the Mexican and Cuban governments. The genre is celebrated for its ability to express universal emotions such as love, nostalgia, and passion.

The ceremony recognized numerous influential composers and performers, including Agustín Lara, María Greever, Consuelo Velázquez, and Armando Manzanero from the Mexican tradition, as well as Cuban figures such as Sindo Garay and Manuel Corona. The bolero continues to function as a significant medium for international intercultural dialogue across Latin America.
