Mexico and Ecuador implement digital identity documents
Governments in Mexico and Ecuador are implementing digital identity solutions to facilitate legal and administrative procedures.
In the State of Mexico, authorities have clarified that digital birth certificates printed on standard bond paper hold the same legal validity as those issued on security paper. These documents utilize electronic security measures, including QR codes, verification codes, and electronic signatures, to ensure authenticity through the National Identity System (SNIP). Citizens can obtain these documents online via official portals or receive them for free through mobile justice caravans.
Similarly, Ecuador has introduced a digital ID card accessible via the Gob. EC platform. This digital version carries the same legal weight as the physical card for both public and private transactions throughout the country. While the digital ID serves as a practical alternative that can be verified via QR code, it remains an optional service and does not replace the physical document.
