Mexico and Ecuador set to clash in World Cup 2026 round of 16

Mexico will meet Ecuador on 30 June 2026 at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match begins at 19:00 local time (20:00 in Ecuador) and will decide which side advances to the quarter‑finals.

Both teams have prepared for the possibility of a penalty shoot‑out. Ecuador coach Sebastián Beccacece said, "Todos los detalles siempre se trabajan," noting that the squad has practiced spot‑kicks and that goalkeepers and their staff have studied the Mexican penalty takers. Goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle added, "El fútbol se ha convertido en un deporte bastante analizable," describing the detailed analysis of opponents' tendencies.

The encounter also pits two of the tournament’s highest‑paid players against each other. Ecuador’s Moisés Caicedo, a Chelsea midfielder, earns an annual salary of roughly US$8 million, while Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado of Chivas receives about US$1.4 million per year.
