Mexico and Guatemala increase security for Independence Day

Authorities in Mexico and Guatemala are implementing heightened security measures ahead of their respective Independence Day celebrations in 2026.

In Morelos, Mexico, the state Civil Protection coordinator, Ubaldo González Carretes, has requested that all 36 municipalities submit a Special Civil Protection Plan for the festivities. These plans aim to establish emergency response procedures for the 250th anniversary of Mexican Independence. Additionally, municipal leaders have been advised to avoid hiring performers who promote illegal activities or criminal behavior.

In Guatemala, the National Civil Police (PNC) has announced a zero-tolerance policy regarding vandalism and violence during patriotic activities, particularly during traditional torch-lighting ceremonies. The PNC aims to prevent the recurrence of past incidents involving aggression with water containers. Guatemalan Governor Mauricio Bernard supported these measures, stating that authorities are increasing controls to ensure celebrations remain orderly.
