Mexico and Japan launch high‑level economic dialogue
Mexico and Japan agreed to establish a High‑Level Economic Dialogue after a series of meetings between Mexican officials – Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon and Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez – and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The mechanism will coordinate cooperation in artificial intelligence, the digital economy, energy, port modernization and railway logistics, aiming to make supply chains more resilient and support Mexico’s energy transition.
Trade between the two countries reached US$9.9 billion in the first five months of 2026, a 4 % increase over the same period a year earlier. Japan is Mexico’s eighth largest trading partner and the fourth biggest investor, with about 1,600 Japanese firms operating in Mexico and creating roughly 350,000 jobs. The partners also announced a joint program to combat sargassum in the Caribbean Sea and pledged to work together on the revision of the USMCA (T‑MEC) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans‑Pacific Partnership (TIPAT).
