Mexico and Mauritius implement new electoral integrity and financing oversight
In Mexico, Electoral Counselor Norma De La Cruz detailed the operation of the newly established Integrity Verification Commission for Candidacies. This voluntary mechanism allows political parties and independent candidates to undergo a preventive profile review. Under this process, the INE generates a folio to protect personal data before sending information to security, financial, and prosecutorial authorities for review. The INE does not conduct the background checks directly; instead, findings are shared confidentially with political parties, who then decide how to address the observations.
In Mauritius, Nogui Acosta, leader of the Partido Pueblo Soberano (PPSO) fraction, expressed expectations for a new investigative commission regarding political financing. The commission aims to investigate funding related to the 2022 and 2026 national elections and seeks to produce legal reforms to strengthen resource controls. Acosta noted the importance of investigating unresolved complaints and analyzing potential links to organized crime and money laundering to ensure transparency within the electoral system.
