Mexico and Paraguay report sharp rise in consumer complaint filings
In Mexico, the financial consumer protection agency CONDUSEF recorded 63,571 complaints between January and May, of which 34,328 (54%) involved attempts at bank fraud targeting institutions such as BBVA, Banorte and Santander. Compared with the same period last year, fraud‑related complaints rose 17.95%, with a notable increase among adults aged 40‑59 and younger adults 19‑29. Authorities warned users to avoid unknown links, block suspicious numbers and verify communications through official channels.
In Paraguay, the consumer‑rights agency SEDECO observed a 74% increase in formal complaints and a 146% jump in enquiries from January to May 2026. Over 8,000 queries and nearly 4,000 complaints were logged, most concerning financial services (19% of cases), telecommunications (12%) and appliances/electronics (11%). More than 90% of cases reaching conciliation were resolved satisfactorily, according to Minister Sara Irún, who highlighted the importance of consumer education and transparent market practices.
