Mexico and Peru expand care programs for vulnerable groups

In the State of Mexico, the government of Governor Delfina Gómez Álvarez, through the State Family Development System (DIFEM), held the second cycle of a permanent seminar titled “A Care System in the State of Mexico.” Director General Karina Labastida Sotelo said the event brings together national and international specialists, public officials and civil‑society representatives to turn the constitutional right to dignified care into a daily reality for children, older adults, people with disabilities and other dependent groups. The Open Society Foundations expressed support for the initiative as a democratic pillar of societal care.

In Peru, the National Integral Program for Family Welfare (Inabif), directed by Melina Locatelli Alfaro, conducted a series of activities in the Moquegua region to strengthen protection for children and adolescents at risk. Meetings with Regional Police Chief Orlando Montenegro Velarde, the street‑educator service and an unannounced inspection of the Santa Fortunata residential care center resulted in agreements to improve inter‑agency coordination, security measures, staff training and service quality for vulnerable youths.
