Mexico and Qatar sign bilateral agreements to strengthen diplomatic ties

Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Álvarez and Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi met in Mexico City for the third Consultation Mechanism on Matters of Common Interest. The meeting focused on geopolitical issues, economic opportunities, and strengthening bilateral ties.

Key outcomes included the signing of bilateral instruments to expand the legal framework between the two nations. These include an agreement to waive visa requirements for holders of diplomatic, official, and special passports, as well as a memorandum of understanding regarding cooperation in diplomatic training and education.

Additionally, the officials discussed maritime security and the upcoming opening of a naval attaché office at the Mexican Embassy in Qatar. The leaders also highlighted collaborative efforts in preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution involving Switzerland and Norway. To celebrate the relationship, 2026 will be designated as the Mexico-Qatar Year of Culture, featuring various artistic and gastronomic programs.
