Mexico and South Africa kick off 2026 FIFA World Cup with fan festivities and new referee camera technology
On June 11, the day before the opening match between co‑hosts Mexico and South Africa, the Mexican Embassy in Singapore staged a large watch party at CHIJMES. More than 500 guests, including diplomats, Singapore football officials and local celebrities, enjoyed Mexican food, music and South African vuvuzelas while the match was shown on a 360‑inch screen. The event highlighted the tournament’s cultural exchange purpose, with officials from both countries publicly expressing friendship.
At the same tournament, FIFA rolled out a wireless referee communication system for all 104 matches. The kit includes a microphone, earpiece and a head‑mounted high‑definition “ref cam” that captures the referee’s point of view. Broadcasters can now show live footage from the official’s perspective, improving transparency and fan engagement. The technology, developed by Lenovo, builds on trials from the 2025 Club World Cup and coincides with a new semi‑automated offside system that sends decisions directly to on‑field officials.
