Mexico and South Korea expand defense and aerospace cooperation

Mexico and South Korea have entered a new phase of economic and strategic cooperation following a state visit by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung to Mexico. During the Korea-Mexico Business Forum in Mexico City, officials and business leaders from both nations signed several memorandums of understanding aimed at strengthening ties in high-tech sectors.

Key areas of collaboration include the defense and aerospace industries, where the countries intend to exchange technical knowledge, develop joint projects, and integrate into global supply chains. Specifically, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and POSCO International have partnered with the Mexican Federation of Aerospace Industry (FEMIA) to explore aerospace manufacturing opportunities in Mexico and the broader Latin American market.

Beyond manufacturing, the expanded cooperation will encompass advanced industries, energy, artificial intelligence, and the cultural sector. Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard noted that the partnership seeks to leverage Mexico’s role as a manufacturing hub in North America alongside South Korea’s technological capabilities to drive mutual economic growth.
