Mexico and UN officials propose budget increases for women's protection

In San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Councilwoman Magdalena Cisneros has called for an increase in the budget dedicated to protecting women and preventing violence. During a municipal commission session, it was reported that the 2026 budget of approximately 8 million pesos is insufficient to meet current needs for autonomy and protection. Cisneros indicated that efforts will focus on redesigning programs for 2027 to better incorporate gender perspectives and enhance safety measures, such as improved street lighting and the recovery of public spaces.

On an international level, the Secretariat for Women has proposed a budget of 532.67 million pesos for 2027 to support shelters for women victims of violence and their children. This proposal represents a 3.43% increase over the previous year and aims to fund 131 spaces, including shelters, external centers, and emergency houses. Secretariat head Laura Itzel Castillo Juárez emphasized that these resources are a priority for protecting lives and stressed the importance of timely fund allocation and impact evaluation.
