Mexico and U.S. authorities intercept endangered parrot species
Authorities in Mexico and the United States have taken action against the illegal trafficking of protected parrot species. In Hidalgo, Mexico, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) seized four parrots in Atotonilco El Grande after a citizen report. The birds, which included yellow-headed parrots and yellow-cheeked parrots, were found in poor condition and lacked legal documentation. These species are protected under Mexican law and CITES due to their endangered or threatened status.
In a separate cross-border operation, 26 Mexican parrots were repatriated to Mexico after being seized by Texas Border Patrol. The group, consisting of five yellow-headed parrots and 21 white-crowned parrots, was being transported by a U.S. citizen without legal documentation. Following coordination between Mexican and U.S. environmental and diplomatic agencies, the birds were transferred to the Ecopark Matamoros Wildlife Management Unit. They will undergo a 45-day sanitary quarantine to ensure they do not introduce diseases to the local fauna.
