Mexico reports 51% drop in homicides at international drug summit FAST-MOVING

At the 40th International Drug Control Conference (IDEC) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mexico's Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, presented the results of the National Security Strategy. Harfuch reported a 51 percent reduction in the daily average of homicides, dropping from 86 in September 2024 to 42 in July 2026. He also noted a 33 percent decrease in high-impact crimes.

Security achievements cited include the detention of over 63,500 people for high-impact crimes, the seizure of 518 tons of drugs (including two tons of fentanyl and five million pills), and the confiscation of over 32,800 firearms. Additionally, the Army and Navy have dismantled more than 2,700 clandestine laboratories used for methamphetamine production.

During the summit, DEA Director Terrance Cole praised Harfuch as a 'trusted partner' and 'good friend' of the United States, emphasizing the importance of intelligence sharing. Harfuch emphasized that international cooperation must respect national sovereignty while addressing transnational criminal networks. The collaboration has already facilitated the transfer of 92 high-impact targets to the United States.
