Mexico announces 1.2 trillion peso energy infrastructure investment

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a historic energy investment plan for her administration, totaling approximately 1.17 trillion to 1.2 trillion pesos through 2030. The funds are designated to strengthen Mexico's electricity and natural gas infrastructure, aiming to incorporate roughly 38,000 megawatts of new capacity into the national electrical system.

Of the total allocation, approximately 794 billion pesos are earmarked for electricity generation, while roughly 141 billion pesos will be used for the construction and expansion of gas pipelines. The strategy focuses on four pillars: energy sovereignty, sustainability, social justice, and national development. A key goal is to ensure that 99.9 percent of communities currently without electricity receive service.

Energy Secretary Luz Elena González Escobar noted that by the end of the term, at least 60 percent of electricity generation should be under public control. The plan also includes a transition toward renewable energy, with targets to increase its share of national generation from 24 percent to 38 percent. To support this, 55 renewable energy projects are currently underway, including photovoltaic and wind power plants.
