IMSS workers hold national protests amid government emergency plan

IMSS workers across more than 21 Mexican states held a national day of protests on October 30, involving marches, blockades, and sit-ins. Demonstrators are demanding the removal of SNTSS general secretary Rafael Olivos Hernández, alleging a lack of representation and violations of union statutes. Workers also rejected a negotiated 8 percent global salary increase, which consists of 4 percent for base salary and 4 percent for rent assistance, demanding instead a minimum 10 percent direct increase to their base salary.

Other primary demands include addressing shortages of medicines and medical supplies, improving hospital infrastructure, and restoring previous pension regimes. Protesters have reportedly collected between 100,000 and 150,000 signatures to support calling for an Extraordinary Congress.

In response to growing unrest, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced an emergency 12-point plan to be implemented within 120 days. The program involves an 11,745 million peso investment and includes the hiring of 2,500 medical specialists, the regularization of 10,939 workers, and the distribution of specialized medical equipment to 39 hospitals. The IMSS has already begun distributing an initial batch of 47 high-tech units, including 3D ultrasound machines, electrocardiographs, and vital signs monitors.
