Healthcare infrastructure investments expand across Latin America
Several Latin American nations are implementing significant healthcare infrastructure investments to expand medical services and capacity.
In Honduras, the Hospital Escuela is undergoing a $29 million modernization project supported by the government and UNOPS. The initiative includes the construction of six high-complexity operating rooms for specialized procedures such as neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, and kidney transplants, alongside the acquisition of $7 million in specialized medical equipment.
In Paraguay, President Santiago Peña inaugurated a new Family Health Unit (USF) in Potrero Angelito, Itacurubí, to bring primary care closer to rural communities. Additionally, the Hospital General de Itapúa (HGI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and IPS, is organizing a pediatric surgery marathon to provide free specialized procedures for approximately 40 children, addressing the shortage of pediatric surgeons.
In the Cordillera department of Paraguay, the government announced a 27 billion guaraní investment to expand the Hospital Regional de Caacupé. Funded through negotiations with Brazil, the project will include a pediatric block, intensive care units, emergency services, and specialized centers for women and families.
