Mexico announces $245 million investment in medical innovation
Mexico is launching a major initiative to bolster its pharmaceutical and petrochemical production, aiming to quadruple domestic output within five years. This strategy seeks to reduce the country's current 90% dependency on foreign imports for active pharmaceutical ingredients and strategic petrochemical raw materials.
As part of the Distrito Tlalpan project in Mexico City, an investment of approximately 4 billion pesos has been announced. This initiative involves a partnership between the Mexico City government, the federal government, UNAM, Tecnológico de Monterrey, and the pharmaceutical industry. The project aims to connect hospitals, universities, and companies to transition scientific discoveries from laboratories to commercial development.
The funding includes 225 million dollars for the expansion of the clinical research company Avant Santé and 20 million dollars for a predictive medicine center at Tecnológico de Monterrey. The Avant Santé expansion will be executed in stages, including 100 million dollars dedicated to early-stage startups. The project is expected to generate over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs for scientists, researchers, and biotechnology experts.
