Mexico announces 750 billion peso railway infrastructure plan

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the Mexican government plans to invest approximately 750 billion pesos in a new railway network over the current six-year term. The project aims to develop roughly 2,400 kilometers of tracks for both passenger and freight services.

Key ongoing projects include the Mexico-Pachuca route (45% complete), Mexico-Querétaro (31%), Querétaro-Irapuato (22%), and the Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo line, which is currently at 10% progress. The Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo project involves an investment of 140.4 billion pesos for 396 kilometers and is expected to serve 30,000 users daily, significantly reducing travel times between metropolitan areas like Saltillo and Monterrey.

Additional developments include the upcoming Irapuato-Guadalajara section, to be constructed by the Secretariat of National Defense, and the preparation of the Querétaro-San Luis Potosí route. The government has already secured over 31 million square meters of right-of-way for these expansions. The strategy focuses on increasing transport alternatives, reducing emissions, and generating employment through infrastructure construction.
