Mexico announces budget increases for science and social care
The Mexican federal government has announced significant budgetary allocations for science, technology, and social care initiatives. For science and technology, the government reported a 111% increase compared to 2025, representing an additional 1,676 million pesos. Observers note that the impact of this increase will depend on how funds are distributed across research, infrastructure, and specific scientific disciplines.
Regarding the consolidation of a “care society,” the federal government plans to allocate approximately 475.9 billion pesos in 2027. Key components of this budget include 56.9 billion pesos for economic transfers to women in recognition of unpaid care work, and 246 million pesos for elderly care services and caregiver training through the Secretariat of Welfare.
Other allocations include 42 million pesos for the Secretariat of National Defense to adapt spaces such as lactation rooms in airports, and various funds within the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) for maternal care benefits and community education services. Laura Itzel Castillo, the new Secretary of Women, is scheduled to present details of these budget annexes to the Senate's Commission for Gender Equality.
