Mexico approves 2027 municipal gender‑parity rule reshaping candidate quotas

A reform approved by a local Mexican congress requires that 50 % of municipalities field women candidates and the remaining 50 % field men for the 2027 municipal elections. The allocation will be determined alphabetically, and the measure received backing from five parliamentary groups, though it faces criticism from twelve competing institutes and potential legal challenges after a recent Supreme Court decision in Jalisco.

Morena (Regeneración Nacional) clarified that the law does not mandate a specific gender for each municipality; parties must respect overall parity while choosing candidates. The party indicated that both a woman or a man could be nominated in San Juan del Río, depending on internal strategy and competitiveness. Potential candidates, including deputy Edgar Inzunza, have said the reform does not limit their eligibility. Morena argues the rule could help it retain strategic municipalities in future elections.
