Mexico approves commercial use of RNA-based biological fungicide

The Mexican government has approved the commercial use of a biological fungicide developed by the U.S. company GreenLight Biosciences. This technology utilizes RNA interference (RNAi) to genetically modify pests through open-field spraying, aiming to eliminate or reduce their ability to cause infection.

Critics have raised concerns regarding the potential risks of this experimental technique. Because the genetic sequences used to silence specific genes in pests may also be present in beneficial insects, plants, or other fungi, there is a risk of unintended damage to biodiversity and the environment. Given Mexico's high level of biodiversity, the rapid approval by Cofepris has been described by some as irresponsible.
