Mexico approves oral semaglutide for weight management

Mexico's health authority, COFEPRIS, has approved a 25 mg oral semaglutide tablet for weight management. This makes Mexico the first country in Latin America to authorize this daily oral medication.

The treatment is indicated for adults with obesity, or those with overweight accompanied by at least one weight-related comorbid condition. It is also approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events—such as non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke—in adults with established cardiovascular disease who are also obese or overweight.

Novo Nordisk expects the medication to be available in Mexican pharmacies within the coming quarters. The oral version provides an alternative to the existing weekly injectable presentation of Wegovy, aiming to address obesity as a chronic condition affecting a significant portion of the Mexican adult population.
