Mexico, Argentina and Spain record May 2026 rise in basic food basket costs

In May 2026 Mexico’s basic food basket increased by 6.3% in rural areas and 6.9% in urban areas, pushing the minimum monthly income needed to $3,554.28 in rural zones and $4,929.96 in cities. Prices for tomatoes, potatoes, chicken, corn tortillas, LPG gas and housing were the main drivers.

Argentina’s Canasta Básica Total reached 1,498,741 pesos, a 2.0% monthly rise and a 34.9% increase over the previous year. The country’s inflation slowed to 2.1% in May, with the most pronounced price gains in seasonal foods, regulated utilities and the core CPI basket.

Spain reported a 2.2% annual rise in overall food prices, with eggs up 13.7% and beef up 12.3% year‑on‑year, while fresh fruit, sugar and oils fell. The food and non‑alcoholic beverage CPI remained at a 3.2% annual rate, unchanged from April.
