Mexico arrests alleged gang leader “El Kino” linked to 2000 homicide
Federal authorities captured Marco Antonio Gómez Vargas, known as “El Kino”, on July 10 in Chiapas and transferred him to the State of Mexico’s justice system. He is accused of involvement in a 2000 shooting in La Paz, State of Mexico, that left a man dead after a street altercation. Investigators say he belongs to a criminal cell with origins in Michoacán involved in murders, extortions and narcotics trafficking in Chicoloapan.
His sister, former Chicoloapan mayor Nancy Gómez Vargas, responded on social media, stating “each person is independent and responsible for their own acts,” while critics highlighted the family's alleged role in local crime networks and questioned her knowledge of the activities.
The arrest follows earlier investigations that linked the Gómez family to organized‑crime activities, including the 2023 detention of another brother, Alexis “N”, and allegations that municipal police protected illicit operations.
