Mexico authorities rescue 135 exotic animals during fuel smuggling raid

Mexican authorities rescued 135 exotic animals during a large-scale operation targeting a fuel smuggling ring in the state of Tamaulipas, near the United States border. The animals discovered on a ranch include African lions, Bengal tigers, hyenas, American bison, monkeys, turtles, and a camel. At least 35 of the animals belong to species threatened with extinction, such as jaguars, New World monkeys, and certain parrot species.

In addition to the wildlife, federal forces seized 68,000 liters of diesel, tanks, pumps, firearms, and various tools. One individual was arrested during the raids. The operation focused on combating 'huachicol'—the illegal importation of gasoline and diesel from the U.S. into Mexico for untaxed resale, a highly profitable activity for organized crime and drug cartels.

The investigation follows previous crackdowns on fuel smuggling networks involving high-ranking naval officers and public officials. Notably, prosecutors have filed charges against former Rear Admiral Fernando Farias, who is believed to be involved in smuggling activities and has reportedly fled to Argentina.
