Mexico authorities warn of passport fraud and fake websites

Authorities in Mexico have issued warnings regarding fraudulent schemes targeting passport applicants. In Coahuila, the State Cyber Police alerted the public to fake websites designed to steal personal and financial information. These fraudulent sites often use social media advertisements and mimic official government aesthetics, including logos and colors, to deceive users. Criminals frequently use slightly altered domain names to appear legitimate and may request bank card numbers and family details.

In Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, the Municipal Office of Liaison with the Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) warned citizens against paying intermediaries for passport appointments. Officials emphasized that scheduling appointments is a free service that can be completed through official channels. The office provides free guidance on documentation and appointment scheduling to prevent citizens from falling victim to illegal charges for services that are provided at no cost by the government.
