Mexico retains FAA Category 1 aviation safety status
Mexico will maintain its Category 1 aviation safety rating from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), despite the identification of 21 technical, administrative, and operational observations during a recent audit of the Mexican Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC).
The FAA evaluated 339 items regarding Mexico's capacity to oversee airline safety. The identified deficiencies include the need to update norms, circulars, and manuals, as well as strengthening inspection programs, staff training, and human resource availability.
To avoid a downgrade, the Mexican government must address these findings within a specified timeframe. The FAA is expected to review progress in December. If the deficiencies are not resolved and the authority fails to demonstrate adequate oversight capacity, a formal downgrade could occur as early as February.
