Mexico’s Education Ministry Orders Nationwide Review of Militarized Schools After Teen’s Death
The death of 13‑year‑old Dafne Zapata Quintos during a summer‑camp at the Academia Militarizada Doenitz in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, sparked a federal response. The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP), led by Secretary Mario Delgado Carrillo, announced a nationwide review of all private schools that offer a militarized education model, stating that such programs are not authorized by the Mexican Constitution nor the General Education Law. SEP sent a circular to the education authorities of all 32 states, reminding them of the legal prohibition and instructing them to inspect the operating permits of identified institutions.
SEP has already identified five additional schools in Tamaulipas that operate under a militarized model and will verify their permits. The agency also clarified that the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Sedena) does not authorize or supervise any such schools. The federal government is coordinating with Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal and has attempted, without success, to contact Dafne’s mother, Alejandra Quintos, for support. Three individuals – director Jorge Luis Ponce Ortega, “Sargento Estrellita” Mora Díaz, and auxiliary Danna Yanina – have been detained in connection with the case, which is being investigated as a femicide by the state prosecutor’s office.
