Mexico begins 2026-2027 intermediate electoral process
The 2026-2027 intermediate electoral process has formally begun in Mexico, with significant administrative preparations underway in Hidalgo and Tamaulipas.
In Hidalgo, the National Electoral Institute (INE) must fill four vacancies in the Local Council before the formal start of the federal process. This includes one proprietary counselor and three alternates. The INE General Council is expected to approve these designations this month, with the local council scheduled for formal installation on September 30. Additionally, seven district councils in the state are slated for installation by November 30.
In Tamaulipas, the electoral process is also underway, with 471 positions at stake during the June 2027 elections. These include 43 municipal governments, 36 local deputies, and eight federal deputies. Eight national political parties have been accredited to participate. The Tamaulipas Electoral Institute (IETAM) is currently working on the activity calendar and budget, with preliminary costs for the election estimated at 600 million pesos.
