Mexico begins remediation of Sonora River toxic spill

The Mexican federal government has launched environmental remediation efforts in the Sonora and Bacanuchi river basins, twelve years after a toxic waste spill by Buenavista del Cobre, a subsidiary of Grupo México. The program aims to remove 100,000 tons of contaminated soil to restore regional environmental conditions.

The project includes five work fronts across the basin, the collection of 800 soil samples over 288 kilometers, and the establishment of camps in Ures, Aconchi, and Huépac. While primary operations are scheduled to conclude within 87 days, supervision will continue until January 2027.

Ileana Villalobos Estrada, undersecretary of Environmental Regulation at Semarnat, stated that local communities will participate in monitoring the actions through bi-weekly evaluation meetings. Mariana Boy Tamborrell, head of Profepa, noted that soil remediation is one of three key components agreed upon with residents, alongside water and health initiatives.
