Mexico begins mobile line suspensions for unregistered users
Mexico has begun a staggered suspension of mobile phone lines that have not been linked to user identities. The measure, implemented by the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), aims to reduce anonymity to combat crimes such as extortion and fraud.
The suspension process began for lines ending in '0' following their August 15, 2026, deadline. Telecommunications companies have a 72-hour window after the deadline to apply service interruptions. Affected users will lose access to mobile data, SMS, and standard calls, though emergency services like 911 and seismic alerts will remain functional.
Users can reactivate their service by completing the registration process through their provider's official channels or at customer service centers. This requires a valid official ID and a CURP (Unique Population Registry Code). The registration process is free and can be done even if the line is currently suspended.
The CRT has established a rolling deadline schedule based on the last digit of the phone number. Lines ending in '1' must register by August 31, 2026, with subsequent groups following throughout the remainder of the year until the final deadline for lines ending in '9' on December 31, 2026. Postpaid (contract) users are generally exempt as their data is already associated with their identity.
