Mexico launches multi‑billion‑peso road, bridge and flood‑control program
The federal government announced a 144.4 billion‑peso program to build and modernise 2,313 km of toll‑free federal highways by 2030, including the construction of 618 bridges and the upgrade of 18 autopistas. The plan also earmarks 50 billion pesos for road conservation, repaving 2,875 km and bacheo on 45,378 km, and is projected to generate roughly 3.9 million jobs.
State and municipal governments are concurrently advancing a series of local projects. Veracruz’s governor Rocío Nahle is preparing a ceremonial flag‑raising for the Sotavento Bridge, while Colima’s governor Indira Vizcaíno inaugurated the La Presa Bridge and a rehabilitated sports unit. In Iztapalapa, Mexico City is installing storm‑water tanks and the underground República Federal collector to curb flooding. Additional works include a bridge in Saltillo’s “Armillita” corridor, the Nogales‑Industrias overpass in Chihuahua, a postponed elevated bridge in Ciudad Juárez, and a new vehicular bridge at Calera, Zacatecas. These initiatives aim to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel times and enhance resilience to heavy rains.
Together, the federal, state and municipal efforts represent a coordinated push to upgrade Mexico’s transport infrastructure and address chronic flood risks.
