Mexico cargo theft reaches 250 million pesos in first half of 2026
The Mexican Council of the Consumer Goods Industry (ConMéxico) reported that cargo theft reached 250 million pesos during the first half of 2026. Stolen mass-consumption products are frequently diverted to secondary and black markets.
While approximately 60 percent of the stolen goods have been recovered, the industry is observing a shift from direct theft toward extortion. This transition has forced some companies to suspend operations in states including Guerrero, Morelos, Sinaloa, Campeche, and Veracruz.
According to ConMéxico, the highest incidence of cargo theft occurs in the states of Mexico, Guanajuato, Puebla, Veracruz, and Jalisco, though overall incidence is reportedly declining. To combat these crimes, companies are investing up to 25 percent of their total expenses into security technology.
