Mexico cargo transport battles low insurance, embraces tech
In Mexico, only about 4% of goods moved by road are covered by cargo insurance, according to Esaú Mendoza Hernández of Keeper Cargo Insurance. He highlights a combination of high theft rates—especially in Jalisco and Guanajuato—and a structural safety problem, with the country ranking seventh worldwide for road accidents and 30‑35% of those involving freight. Legal limits often leave carriers with minimal compensation, threatening small and medium‑sized enterprises that cannot absorb a loss. International insurers are responding with higher deductibles and stricter terms for shipments traveling through Mexico.
At the same time, transport firms such as Transportes NIU are promoting intelligent logistics to improve safety and delivery reliability. Using GPS monitoring, IoT sensors, and real‑time route‑optimization algorithms, NIU claims to cut fuel costs, avoid road‑related delays, and provide full visibility of cargo. The company says its technology‑driven approach helps mitigate the very risks that undermine cargo insurance uptake, offering a more secure and punctual service for shippers.
Both issues underscore the challenges and opportunities in Mexico’s freight sector: a critical need for broader insurance coverage and the potential for advanced logistics technology to enhance security and efficiency.
