The Archdiocese Primada de México issued an editorial titled “Desde la Fe” on 1 August, warning that proposed audience‑rights regulations should not open the door to prior censorship or allow any authority to decide the truth, legitimacy or acceptability of opinions expressed on radio and television. The warning comes as Mexico’s telecom regulator, the Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones (CRT), conducts a public consultation on the General Guidelines for the Protection of Audience Rights, open from 27 July to 21 August, inviting comments from audiences, broadcasters, academia and civil‑society groups.

The draft guidelines call for broadcasters to provide truthful, plural, clear, respectful and inclusive information, adopt ethics codes, register and publicise them, and establish audience defenders who can intervene when a complainant is dissatisfied. The Church stresses that freedom of expression is a fundamental right that must not be subject to prior censorship, that the right of reply is essential for truth‑seeking, and that a diversity of opinions strengthens democracy. It also urges regulation of digital platforms and algorithms so they serve humans rather than manipulate or polarise society, and calls for ethical responsibility from authorities, media, platforms and citizens.

The Church’s position is framed as a call for ethical media standards and safeguards that protect both freedom of expression and the dignity of the human person while the CRT’s consultation proceeds.
