Mexico celebrates Veterinarian-Zootechnician Day
Mexico celebrates Veterinarian-Zootechnician Day on August 17 to honor professionals dedicated to animal health, food production, and ecosystem protection. The date commemorates the 1853 founding of the first veterinary medicine school in the Americas, established by a presidential decree from Antonio López de Santa Anna.
The institution was originally integrated into the existing National College of Agriculture at the former Colegio de San Gregorio. Following periods of instability and closure, veterinary studies were later hosted by the National School of Agriculture, now known as the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo. In 1939, the institution became the National School of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, expanding its scope to include the breeding and improvement of economically valuable species.
Beyond pet care, these professionals play a critical role in public health by detecting animal-borne diseases that could affect humans and preventing the introduction of pathogens into the food supply chain.
