Mexico celebrates World Cup win with massive crowds in Mexico City

Mexico's national soccer team defeated South Korea 1‑0 in Guadalajara, clinching first place in Group A of the 2026 World Cup and guaranteeing a home‑soil round‑of‑16 match. The victory sparked a city‑wide celebration, with estimates of 700,000 people gathering at various points across Mexico City. About 400,000 gathered at the Ángel de la Independencia on Paseo de la Reforma, while additional fans crowded bars, restaurants and other public screens.

Former forward Jared Borgetti praised the team's compact play, and coach Javier Aguirre highlighted the improved performance compared with the opening match. Authorities installed extra large screens for upcoming games, and the city’s mayor announced further preparations for the tournament.

The celebrations featured live commentary, fireworks and traditional chants such as “¡México, México!” and “Cielito lindo,” reflecting the nation’s enthusiasm for the tournament hosted jointly by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
