Mexico Chamber of Deputies detects 35 armed legislators
The Chamber of Deputies' Security Directorate reported that 35 legislators were found to be carrying firearms at the San Lázaro Legislative Palace. The detection was made using canine units trained to identify weapons and explosives, which flagged both vehicles and individual deputies entering the premises.
In response, the Board of Directors has requested that parliamentary coordinators instruct their members to cease entering the legislative building armed. Security measures have been intensified, including the use of specialized mirrors to inspect vehicle chassis and increased canine patrols. Under Article 25, numeral 4 of the Chamber's regulations, bringing weapons into the facility is strictly prohibited, and the Board of Directors is authorized to refer violators to the appropriate authorities.
The tightening of security follows a recent confrontation between PRI deputy Carlos Gutiérrez Mancilla and legislators from Movimiento Ciudadano. Additionally, the Chamber's Ethics Committee is expected to review complaints regarding an incident involving the spilling of liquid on Movimiento Ciudadano office branding.
