Mexico's cultural heritage highlighted in Mérida events and Shanghai exhibition

Mérida’s summer cultural calendar is packed with free activities. The Semana Meridana program offers daily music, dance, theatre, traditional vaquería, Maya ball games and night markets across the historic centre. Simultaneously, the Yucatán Ministry of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta) opened four free temporary exhibitions: "TESIS + Injerto 2026" of emerging artists, "Cachorros de Tigre" showcasing 125 years of Mexican drawing, a student‑created series on Yucatán’s churches and palaces, and Pablo Tut’s "Invención de Tierra" linking Maya history to contemporary issues.

The city also marked the 25th edition of the Feria Artesanal Tunich, featuring 168 artisans from Yucatán and other Mexican states, with concerts, folk ballet and free shuttle service. The Feria de Mérida 2026 poster contest crowned Jesús Vinagre Mateo’s design “Destellos en el valle,” celebrating local heritage.

Beyond local events, the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia inaugurated the "Espacios sagrados" exhibition in Shanghai, displaying 804 pre‑Hispanic pieces from the Olmec, Teotihuacán, Maya and Mexica cultures. Curator Roberto Velasco highlighted the show as a cultural bridge between Mexico and China, emphasizing shared human creativity.

Together, these initiatives showcase a concerted effort to make Yucatán’s history and contemporary art accessible to residents, tourists and an international audience.
