Mexico City authorities issue warnings regarding animal welfare and exotic species trade
The Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) has issued a public advisory to protect pets, specifically black dogs and cats, during October and November. The agency warned that certain rituals and beliefs during this period may lead to the mistreatment or theft of black-furred animals. The SSC recommended that citizens verify the identity of anyone adopting a pet and encouraged reporting suspicious activities, such as illegal sales or animal trafficking, via official social media channels or telephone.
In a separate development, activists in the Polanco district of Mexico City held a march to protest the sale of exotic animals. Demonstrators called for the closure of establishments and private fairs that trade in wild species, including felines, macaws, and reptiles, arguing that such commerce fuels illegal trafficking and animal cruelty.
Under Mexican law, possessing wild or exotic animals without proper permits from authorities like SEMARNAT or PROFEPA is illegal. Violators face severe administrative sanctions, including immediate seizure of the animals and fines ranging from 50 to 50,000 Units of Measure and Update (UMA), which can exceed 5 to 7 million pesos.
