Mexico City authorities warn of betting fraud ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Secretariat of Security and Protection of Citizens (SSPC) and the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City issued a joint alert about fraudulent sports‑betting sites and related scams targeting fans during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Authorities said cybercriminals are creating fake betting platforms, apps and promotions, and distributing links through social media, texting, email and messaging groups that promise guaranteed winnings, extraordinary bonuses or free bets.

The agencies advised the public to verify that any betting service is legally authorized, to avoid clicking on unsolicited links, and to protect personal and financial data. They also urged users to report suspicious websites, profiles or applications to the city’s Cyber Police, which can be reached via phone, email, or official social‑media accounts.
