Mexico City celebrates three years of sonidero culture as intangible heritage

More than 50 sonideros gathered in the Azcapotzalco borough of Mexico City to celebrate the third anniversary of the sonidero culture being recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mexico City.

The event, held at Calzada La Naranja in the San Pedro Xalpa neighborhood, featured a variety of tropical rhythms including cumbia, salsa, and danzón. Participants included prominent figures such as Sonido Fania de la Aguilera, Sonido Marysol, and Ely Fania, among many others.

The celebration aims to preserve a tradition that originated in popular neighborhoods and has become a central part of the city's identity through its unique use of large sound systems, lighting, and rhythmic musical mixes.
